Dentures and Mini Dental Implants (MDI)

Conventional & Immediate Dentures

Complete dentures are called "conventional" or "immediate" according to when they are made and when they are inserted into the mouth.

Immediate dentures are inserted immediately after the removal of the remaining teeth. To make this possible, measurements are taken at the first visit. The immediate denture allows the patient to have replacement teeth the same day the remaining teeth are extracted and during the healing period (major advantage).

Gums and bones can shrink over time, especially during the period of healing. Immediate dentures may require rebasing or relining to fit properly. A conventional denture can be made once the tissues have healed.

An overdenture is a removable denture that fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth (need to be worked on to provide stability and support for the denture) or implants (conventional or Mini Dental Implants).

Mini Dental Implant (MDI)

MDI is the definitive solution for your loose dentures. If you are unable to eat what you want and you are sick of the taste and feel of denture adhesives you may be a good candidate for Mini Dental Implants.

With the mini implants you can enjoy secure eating comfort again. The mini dental implant consists of a miniature titanium implant that acts like the root of your tooth and the retaining fixture that is incorporated into the base of your denture.

Freedom to eat the foods you love!

The head of the implant is shaped like a ball, and the retaining fixture acts like a socket that contains a rubber O-ring.

The O-ring snaps over the ball when the denture is seated and holds the denture at a predetermined level of force.

When seated, the denture gently rests on the gum tissue. The implant fixtures allow for micro-mobility while whithstanding natural lifting forces.

  • MDI is a simple technique (non-invasive surgery).
  • It can be used with new or existing dentures.
  • The dentures are stabilized the day the mini implants are placed (immediate results)
  • It is affordable compared to conventional implants.

~ About Your Dentures ~

How long should I wear my dentures?

The first 24 to 72 hours after your dentures have been completed and inserted by the dentist you should wear them most of the time (including while you sleep) in order for your mouth to adjust to the dentures. After the first 2 days the dentures should be removed before bedtime to allow the tissues to rest.

Should I use denture adhesives?

Denture adhesives can provide additional retention for well-fitting dentures but is not a solution for old, ill-fitting dentures. A poorly fitting denture, which causes constant irritation over a long period, may contribute to the development of sores. Old dentures may need a reline or need to be replaced.

How do I take care of my dentures?

Dentures are very delicate and may break if dropped. Stand over a folded towel or a basin of water when handling dentures.

When you are not wearing them, store your dentures in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in water away from children and pets. Avoid using hot water.

Brush your dentures daily to remove food debris and plaque using a toothbrush with soft bristles or brushes designed to clean dentures. Avoid using hard-bristled brushes that can damage dentures. You may use hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid but stay away from bleach or other powdered household cleansers.

How often should I schedule dental appointments?

You should visit us twice a year. The dentist will examine your mouth for signs of oral diseases and check the fit of your dentures. Your dentures will also be cleaned.
